Sometimes all you need is somewhere to begin. Take Root offers prompts for writers, artists, photographers, and curious makers, with optional constraints, strange turns, and seasonal inspiration to help an idea take root.

The Black Root Press

INAUGURAL ISSUE — SUBMISSIONS OPEN

Publishing trans and nonbinary writers and artists.

Our first issue, coming Spring 2027!

Submissions are open for our inaugural issue! There is no theme. We're looking for poetry, fiction, nonfiction, visual art, and experimental work on any subject. Your work does not need to explore trans or nonbinary identity. We simply want to showcase the creativity and voices of our community.

For Our Contributors

We're a new, independent press committed to celebrating and supporting trans and nonbinary creators.

Every contributor selected for our inaugural issue will receive $10 and a complimentary hand-sewn copy of the magazine.

We'll also be producing free, handmade, staple-bound print copies for distribution throughout the Portland area. We believe art should be accessible, and we're excited to share the work of our contributors with the local community.

Submission deadline: January 31, 2027.
